Skræligen Language

Skræligen is one of the two main languages on Skrælige, the other more widely spoken one being English. Skræligen derives from the Old Norse spoken by the original settlers, but has deviated substantially in a number of ways over the past millennium. Broadly speaking, these changes have been:

1. The writing has been simplified somewhat, with most accent marks being omitted. For example árþúsund in Old Norse (millennium) became arþusund in Skræligen.

2. Grammar is much closer to English, given the last few centuries of English's presence on the island. (Author's note: this requires more research and development.)

3. Where words are similar to their English counterparts, the Skræligen words have morphed slightly towards their English counterparts. (Author's note: this requires more research and development.)

To a lesser extent, the dialect of English spoken on Skrælige has picked up on the vocabulary of Skræligen.

Alphabet

The Skræligen alphabet has 28 letters - all 26 found in English, plus two Norse letters eth (Ð/ð) and thorn (Þ/þ). Unlike in other Norse-derived languages, Æ/æ and Œ/œ are not considered to be separate letters, but are just ligatures representing AE/ae and OE/oe respectively.
